Welcome

Macalister Four Wheel Drive Touring and Social Club Inc. or Mac4WD for short, was formed on the 14th August 1992. We are affiliated with Four Wheel Drive Victoria [FWDV] and strongly supports their principles and activities.
Mac4WD centres around, and actively advocates, the responsible use of four wheel drive vehicles and the enjoyment of the Australian bush. We adhere to the “Tread Lightly” principles, and promote sustainable four wheel driving [4WD] and camping in a safe, responsible and legal manner.
Anyone – from families to the matured ‘grey haired’ retirees – that wishes to learn and participate in a great activity under safe and legal conditions is most welcome, as are all types of vehicles. If you do not have a four wheel drive, you can come along as a passenger.
“Macalister Four Wheel Drive Touring and Social Club” comes from:
‘Macalister’, after the main river in the region, known to the local Gunai–Kurnai as ’Wirnwirndook’yeerun’, meaning the song of, purportedly, an emu wren. Named by the somewhat controversial explorer, Angus McMillan in 1839, after his employer, Captain Lachlan Macalister. The ‘Macalister’ is synonymous with the Wellington Shire & is an appropriate name for the club, as we are ‘Wellington Shire’s only 4WD club’,
‘Four Wheel Drive’ advocating and promoting the use of four wheel drive vehicles as a responsible recreational activity.
‘Touring’ ranging from very easy, local area day and long weekend trips, to extended, long–range, multi day/week trips across Australia.
‘Social’ activities ranging from regular lunches and meetings, to impromptu get togethers, and 4WD trips to camp in swags, tents, camper–trailers and caravans.
Mac4WD members conduct a wide range of activities. We volunteer with Trip and Attraction orientation for the local Port of Sale Visitor Centre, promote 4WD through local and FWDV shows and other activities, and assist the major Land Managers such as Parks Victoria with “Camp Hosting”, “Track Clearing”, and “Clean Up the Bush” programs.
Training is provided by Mac4WD Club Instructors in Basic 4WD operation and techniques, and by FWDV Accredited Instructors in subjects including “4WD Proficiency”, Chainsaw Operations", “Track Classification”, and “First Aid”.
Membership of Mac4WD does not have too many commitments but there are a few basic objectives.
: We ensure that the environment is passed on to posterity in as good condition, if not better, than we find it now. We must always show a good example to bush users.
: We ensure that safety is never compromised: we always bring our members and, hopefully their vehicles, safely back from the bush.
: We are committed to the region in which we live, participating in activities that benefit our community.
: Each trip has only one Trip Leader. A good Trip Leader always ensures that there is consultation with members but always takes the responsibility & has the final say!
We currently meet on the third Saturday of each month [expect January and December] at Sale Greyhounds Graze Bistro at 12:00 for lunch followed by a meeting in the Champions Room at 13:00. All are welcome.
